Little Bighorn

After we went to Devils Tower, we made a beeline to the Rocky Mountains. Following Interstate 90 we went through Montana towards Yellowstone. One place I had looked into going but sort of forgot about was Little Bighorn. For those of you that aren't history buffs. The Battle of Little Bighorn was a fight between the Sioux and the U.S. Cavalry led by George Armstrong Custer. The outcome was total annihilation of the troopers. Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse were at the battle. The Indians wiped out the soldiers. Many books have been written about the battle. Custer made many mistakes. He misjudged the size of the opposing force, he divided his smaller force (twice) and he was extremely arrogant. His troopers paid the price for his mistakes.

We were driving down the highway and saw the sign for the National Battlefield. Like I said I had looked into going months in advance while planning the trip. Since we had an early start for our long day of driving, we had a few hours to spend.

We took a ranger led tour. It was one of the best tours I have ever been on. The guide was ex military. He knew the battle inside and out. He spoke with passion .He reminded us many times "this was war". It was not just history books. It was hand to hand warfare. It was horses getting shot. it was dying soldiers bleeding out. The tour was incredibly emotional.

The spot on the battlefield Custer was found
dead.

The markers are not graves. They are the spot soldiers and
Indians were found

U.S Army markers are white
Native American markers are granite
